Insights from Jim Carrey

When I heard that actor, comedian, author, and producer, Jim Carrey, would be giving the commencement speech at Maharishi University of Management, in Fairfield, Iowa, where I live, I was hesitant to go because I have always thought of him as a goofy guy who will do anything for a laugh. How could you possibly take a guy like that seriously? But I went because I was curious as to what he would say. Of course he was funny and entertaining as expected, but that day I saw another side of Jim Carrey that was not expected. Not only was I surprised and delighted at the depth of his thoughts about life, but also I was moved, inspired, and excited by his understanding of metaphysics, spirituality, and how he uses the Law of Attraction to create a successful life.

In fact, I was so inspired that I wanted to share some insights from Jim Carrey with you, because his speech could have just as easily been written for an audience of aspiring entrepreneurs as a group of college graduates.

He is a success story himself…he has made 40 films, including some as a producer; his films have grossed over $3 billion dollars in revenue, and he has made 100’s of thousands of people laugh. And as we all know, laughter reduces stress, exercises the lungs, improves mental health, radiates positive energy, and “is the best medicine.” But, perhaps all they need in their life is a good laugh, a bit of happiness and family’s support. Don’t Make This Mistake! #3

This is arguably a tool for e-commerce data analytics as it allows you to possibly keep track of your customers. Don’t Make This Mistake! #2

Businesses are set up to make profit. So, business owners need to make sure their business plan is as impactful as possible. They need to balance their spending with their revenue. They need to find out what their competitors are doing.

But, this is a lot of work. If you could shorten the learning curve to building a successful business, would you jump at the chance? Many business owners do. They want to apply the most effective strategies that can get their business up and running, bringing in more revenue and growth.

How do they do that in a short time? It’s definitely going to take some effort, but choosing to put in that effort with the help of something like business growth coaching can put them ahead by leaps and bounds.

Well, here’s another tip for shortening that learning curve.

A mistake coaches make that I see all the time is that they set up a great website with attractive graphics and compelling content, but they don’t have any method for capturing leads. That means that visitors who come to their site and aren’t ready to purchase just leave. That’s a mistake because in the coaching industry, it’s important to develop relationships. And you can only do that by repeated contact.

There’s only one way to have repeated contact with a potential client from your website, and that’s to have an opt-in box so visitors can get on your list. Once they are on your list, you can educate them more about what you do and market to them in your own controlled environment.

Another mistake that goes along with this is to have an opt-in box but nothing to entice them to opt-in. People are no longer interested in getting your newsletter—they are looking for quick solutions to their problems. You can give them that with a compelling gift offer. That is, an opt-in gift that gives them some kind of help right away. It can be some tips, a technique, or some content that educates them on what the real problem is and how you can solve it.

Don’t Make This Mistake!

So many life coaches make this mistake that I want to warn you about it. I made it too and I want to help you avoid it. What happens is a new coach is all enthusiastic about starting their new coaching business and they set up a website, get business cards, start coaching people and then discover that they either aren’t getting clients, or they don’t like their niche and want to change it.

The mistake is that they didn’t begin by doing market research in the beginning. By doing market research, they would have been able to choose the best domain name for their website, used client-attracting language in their marketing materials to attract their ideal clients, and been able to get a steady flow of clients much earlier in their business. 

Almost every brick and mortar business owner will tell you that it would be foolish to open a business without first doing extensive market research. Whether you want to learn about concept testing best practices or conduct surveys to a focus group, market research is key! The same applies to an online business and new technologies are making market research even easier to implement. With help from the internet, you can now reach out to potential as well as existing clients to send them a questionnaire within minutes.

Believe in Yourself – Part 2

In a previous blog I talked about four different things that I did to get my business into profit. But there’s one more thing I did that really pushed me over the top. You see, the techniques that you can use to keep yourself motivated and positive shift your energy so that you attract more supportive situations, people, and ideas into your life. Of course the key is to believe in yourself.

But you also have to take dynamic action along with a leap of faith—that’s where belief in yourself comes in. So after I did the four things I mentioned in the last blog post, I reached out to find a coach. I was still paying off the expenses incurred from the last group-coaching program I had participated in so I had taken a break from having a coach. It had been six months and I knew that it was time to hire another coach.  So when an opportunity arose that resonated with me, I took advantage of it and started working with my new coach.

Believe in Yourself

One of the biggest keys to your success is to believe in yourself.  So many times I see coaches get discouraged in the beginning stages of their coaching business when things don’t go well or disappointments occur.  This is the time when you need to be vigilant about staying in control of your mindset.  The best way to do that is to remember to believe in yourself—your abilities, your gifts, your mission, and your vision.

So often we tend to focus on what went wrong and beat ourselves up for it, instead of focusing on what has gone well.  That’s because for some reason the human brain blows negative things way out of proportion. But you can stop that tendency by simply and deliberately focusing on all the little things that you have done right.

New Video: Increase Your Coaching Income

When I started my coaching business, if someone had told me that I had to either make a video or get up in front of my friends and make a fool of myself, I would have chosen the latter. That’s how opposed I was to the idea.  Several years into my business I made a few videos and ended up removing them because I just wasn’t satisfied with them.

But now I am more comfortable with them and found out that I absolutely love making videos through PowerPoint.  I get to use my graphic talents and convey my message through audio.  It’s become a wonderful tool.

Decisions, Decisions, Decisions

Recently, I picked up a used copy of Tony Robbins’ second book, “Awaken the Giant Within” and I must say—what a wealth of information is in it! In fact, I devoured in a week and am reading it for a second time. His six points on harnessing the power of decisions are so enlightening that I wanted to share part of it here:

1. Remember the true power of making decisions. It’s a tool you can use at any moment to change your entire life. The minute you make a new decision, you set in motion a new cause, effect, direction, and destination for your life. You literally begin to change your life the moment you make a new direction. Remember that when you start feeling overwhelmed, or when you feel like you don’t have a choice, or when things are happening “to” you, you can change it all if you just stop and decide to do so. Remember, a real decision is measured by the fact that you’ve taken a new action. If there’s no action, you haven’t truly decided. The way to get life back on track is to make decisions that are right for you.

2. Realize that the hardest step in achieving anything is making a true commitment—a true decision. Carrying out your commitment is often much easier than the decision itself, so make your decisions intelligently, but make them quickly. Don’t labor forever over the question of how or if you can do it. Studies have shown that the most successful people make decisions rapidly because they are clear on their values and what they really want for their lives. The same studies show that they are slow to change their decisions, if at all. On the other hand, people who fail usually make decisions slowly, and change their minds quickly, always bouncing back and forth. Just decide!
