(and How to Overcome Them)
Many coaches know that collaboration could help them grow their business—but they still avoid it. Why? Because mindset blocks often hold them back without them even realizing it.
If you’ve ever found yourself resisting the idea of working with other coaches or business owners, this article will help you spot (and overcome) the most common mental barriers.
1) “I’m Not Enough of an Expert Yet.”
This belief is incredibly common. Coaches often assume that collaboration is reserved for the “big names” or those with large audiences. But here’s the truth:
Collaboration is one of the fastest ways to build your authority, not something that comes after you’ve established it.
Each time you partner with someone and share your insights with a new audience, your credibility grows. You don’t need a certain number of followers or years of experience. You need willingness to share value.
Shift your mindset: Collaboration is a growth strategy, not a reward for hitting a certain milestone.
2) “I’ll Be Helping My Competition.”
Fear of competition keeps many coaches isolated. It feels safer to focus inward and avoid connecting with peers in your niche.
But the truth is, collaboration with others in your space can still grow your audience and authority. Why? Because no two coaches are the same. You have unique methods, energy, and experiences that make you different from others doing similar work.
When you partner with fellow coaches, you help each other reach ideal clients who resonate with your unique style.
Shift your mindset: Other coaches aren’t your competition—they’re your colleagues and potential growth partners. Start your collaboration strategy by finding coaching colleagues that target an audience similar to yours. Set up a meeting with them and brainstorm how you can help each other.
3) “I Don’t Know What to Say or Offer.”
Many coaches avoid collaborations simply because they don’t know how to initiate a partnership. They overthink the outreach, fearing they’ll say the wrong thing or get rejected. Be aware that you will get rejections – that’s just a matter of course. For example, I sent out 50 invitations to meet regarding collaboration opportunities, and I got about 10 responses. Son’t get discouraged. It’s a numbers game, as they say!
In reality, collaboration starts with offering simple, genuine value. A basic message like, “I love your work and think our audiences align. Would you be open to collaborating on a workshop or content swap?” is often enough to open the door.
Shift your mindset: You don’t need a perfect pitch—you need to start a conversation.
4) “What If There’s Conflict or Miscommunication?”
The fear of a partnership going wrong can feel paralyzing. Worrying about what might happen often stops coaches from reaching out at all.
While it’s true that some collaborations might not go as planned, most challenges can be avoided with clear communication up front. Set expectations, clarify responsibilities, and use agreement documents to ensure mutual understanding.
Shift your mindset: Focus on clear communication and shared goals, not potential problems. You can draw up a set of guidelines that your partners must follow and have them agree to them.
5) “Collaborations Won’t Really Help My Business.”
Some coaches simply underestimate the power of collaboration. They think it’s just a visibility tactic for getting more subscribers, with little financial return.
In reality, collaboration can drive list growth, audience expansion, joint offers, affiliate income, and even direct sales. The relationships you build through collaboration can become some of your most profitable assets.
Shift your mindset: Collaboration isn’t a distraction from business growth—it’s a catalyst for it. When you know how to set up collaborations correctly it becomes a win/win for both parties.
