I recently visited the Biltmore Estate in Asheville, North Carolina, and I took a lot of photos. It was really like visiting a museum with all the fine art and architecture.
To give you some background, George Vanderbilt was the eighth child of William Vanderbilt, who was the second child of Cornelius Vanderbilt, who created the Vanderbilt fortune through a ferry business in Manhattan and later through investments in the new railroads. Because George was more interested in books and art than business, his early life was spent reading and visiting museums and famous places around the world with his family.
At the age of 25, he visited Asheville, North Carolina, and fell in love with the area. He decided to build a beautiful home that could entertain friends and house a collection of art and fine furniture. In 1885, he began building his home by employing the best artisans of his day, including the most important architect at the time, Richard Morris Hunt, and the famous landscaper, Frederick Law Olmstead.
The result was a stunning “castle” of beautiful objects and architecture that left a legacy for generations to enjoy.
I have always wanted to see it and this summer I finally got my wish. It was an amazing experience seeing works of art by Monet, John Singer Sargent, and all the exquisite architectural details of Hunt’s incredible talent. All the furniture was original to when George’s family occupied it beginning in 1895. And it’s still occupied and run by his descendants.
