The power of will is an interesting subject because everyone has willpower, but they don’t always use it to the best of their advantage. Why is that?
We were never taught anything about willpower, unless we were going on a diet, which we probably didn’t do when we were little kids. So we grew up with either misconceptions or no information at all on how to use willpower, and that is very sad because it is a great gift from the Divine Source.
What willpower does is it strengthens your resolve. You have a desire, you resolve that you are going to achieve that desire, and then you use your willpower to complete all the steps needed to achieve that goal.
Now let’s say that your goal is to diet, to lose a certain number of pounds. What most dieters are taught is that when you crave something that you know you’re not supposed to eat because it’s fattening, you use your willpower to not do that thing. This is sort of using willpower backwards because you’re using it in a negative sense. You want to not do something.
But willpower can also be used in a positive vein by giving yourself a choice when you have to decide something. So the choice can be: do I have a cookie or a banana? Do I have a piece of cake or a salad? Giving yourself choices takes away the negative part of willpower.
Now you can use this power of choice in business too. Do I go out to a networking meeting and find new possible joint venture partners, or do I sit home and watch TV? You see, when you give yourself a choice, then it becomes obvious as to what you need to do to reach your goal, and the willpower is there to remind you of what the goal is.
So willpower is best used for holding on to your ambition and resolve for each of your goals. The next time that you’re tempted to do something that you know is counterproductive to what you want to achieve, instead of fighting the temptation and trying to use your willpower to make the right decision, give yourself a choice. That way, it will not only make it easier to come to a decision but also cause less stress in your nervous system.
